ISLAMABAD (Oct 10): Pakistan’s federal government is poised to impose emergency rule or governor’s rule in the volatile Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, following high-level crisis talks in the capital amid a rapidly deteriorating political and security situation.
The decision was reached during a pivotal 35-minute meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Saturday. Top federal officials attended the briefing, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, and Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar.
Sources close to the administration told YeJahan News Network that officials concluded there was “no other option” left but to take extraordinary measures to restore order in the northwestern province, which has been the flashpoint of intense political friction and security challenges.
Midnight deadlock: High-stakes talks collapse as PTI defies Islamabad with long march showdown
To formalise the move, Prime Minister Sharif has summoned an emergency meeting of the federal cabinet tomorrow. The cabinet is expected to ratify the enforcement of emergency measures before the resolution is sent to parliament.
Under Pakistan’s constitution, any declaration of emergency or governor’s rule must secure parliamentary approval within ten days. Separate sessions of both the National Assembly and the Senate have been pencilled in for Tuesday, where the government will seek a simple majority to validate the constitutional intervention.
In a bid to build a broader political consensus before the parliamentary showdown, Shehbaz Sharif also meet with seasoned politician Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), later that evening.

Meanwhile, Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has signaled its willingness to engage with the government to defuse the country’s gridlocked political crisis.
A party spokesman confirmed PTI would welcome a mediation role by the chief of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) bloc, describing any potential intervention to lower political temperatures as a positive step.
The move marks a notable shift in tone toward a traditional rival, as the opposition party calls for an end to institutional confrontation.
“The country urgently requires political wisdom, restraint, and meaningful dialogue rather than ongoing friction,” the PTI spokesman said, adding that serious steps are now needed to stabilize the political landscape
The moving of federal crosshairs onto Khyber Pakhtunkhwa marks a significant escalation in Pakistan’s ongoing political crisis, signalling that the central government is ready to strip the provincial administration of its powers to regain control.
