ISLAMABAD (Oct 10): A ruthless serial conman who allegedly drove a brilliant university gold medalist to end her own life after swindling her impoverished family out of their life savings has been arrested.
The prime suspect, identified as Noman, was intercepted by Islamabad Capital Police on Saturday following a nationwide outcry that reached the very highest echelons of the state. Investigators have revealed that the suspect is not a legitimate education consultant, but a career fraudster who routinely posed as a senior accountant for the Supreme Court to trick vulnerable families.
The arrest comes after a dark, tragic sequence of events that has gripped the country. Laiba Ijaz, a stellar 22-year-old student who had just graduated from the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) with a coveted gold medal, was found dead on a green belt in Islamabad’s Sector G-10.
A Family Ruined by Hope
Driven by a fierce ambition to pursue her postgraduate studies in the United States, Laiba had sought the services of a consultant to secure an American student visa and scholarship. The suspect allegedly demanded a staggering 7 million Pakistani Rupees (approximately £21,000) to arrange the paperwork.
YeJahan got access to CCTV footage of Laiba leaving her home to take drastic action.
To fund his exceptionally gifted daughter’s dreams, Laiba’s father—a low-income milkman who had spent his life selling milk from the back of a motorcycle to pay for his children’s schooling—made the ultimate sacrifice. He sold the family’s sole plot of land to hand over a down payment of 2.1 million Rupees. In a desperate bid to raise the remaining balance, the family went as far as pledging the mother’s ancestral gold jewellery to a local bank.
The devastating deception unravelled only when the family formally verified the university acceptance and visa documents, only to discover they were complete, amateur forgeries.
Plagued by the unbearable guilt of having financially ruined her family, Laiba send final text message to her maternal uncle before committing suicide. In a heartbreaking plea, she wrote: “Do not tell my father about the fraud.” Shortly after, she ended her life.
Prime Minister Demands Justice
The tragedy sparked immediate intervention from Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, who ordered an urgent, top-level crackdown on the culprit. Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi personally visited the grieving family’s home, where Laiba’s distraught father broke down in tears.
Syed Shehzad Nadeem Bukhari, the Director of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Islamabad Zone, also visited the family to confirm that the case will be handled under strict anti-cybercrime and national security laws.
“This is not a mere visa agent; this is a calculated predator,” Director Bukhari stated. He vowed that the state would treat Laiba’s case as a historic “test case” to dismantle the predatory visa-scam industry operating in the country.
The FIA has confirmed that Noman’s accomplices are currently being hunted across the country, and their names have been added to the national stop-list to prevent them from fleeing abroad.
