DERA MURAD JAMALI (Oct 28): Amajor disaster in Balochistan averted on Wednesday after insurgents targeted a moving passenger train Jaffar Express with rocket fire and heavy gunfire, officials said. Separately, target killings in Dera Bugti claimed three lives in two distinct shooting incidents.
The primary attack occurred within the jurisdiction of the Nutal police station near the Khaliqabad area of Dera Murad Jamali. According to senior police sources, militants positioned approximately two kilometers east of the railway tracks launched a coordinated assault on the Peshawar-bound Jaffar Express.
The attackers fired two rockets and unleashed a volley of automatic gunfire at the speeding train.
“It was a miraculous escape,” a senior police official told reporters. “The rockets narrowly missed the carriages, exploding a short distance away from the tracks. Despite the heavy gunfire that followed, both the passengers and the train structure remained entirely unharmed.”
Engine drivers maintained momentum to pull the train out of the kill zone, safely reaching the next transit point. Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and launched a localized sweep operation to track down the assailants, who fled deeper into the rugged terrain under the cover of the terrain.
Meanwhile, bloodshed marred neighboring Dera Bugti, where targeted shootings left three people dead.
According to local police, unidentified gunmen opened fire in two separate incidents near Shakh No. 4 of the Kachhi Canal project. The victims, whose identities were not immediately made public, sustained fatal multiple gunshot wounds.
