WASHINGTON (Oct 28): The Federal Reserve held its target interest rate steady at the conclusion of its October policy meeting, moving to gather more data on a resilient domestic economy while pledging an unyielding commitment to its 2% inflation target.

The decision came alongside a stark institutional divide. In a rare 10-2 split, Federal Reserve Governor Lisa D. Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth M. Hammack dissented from the majority, voting instead for an immediate quarter-percentage-point rate hike.

In its accompanying policy statement, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) described economic expansion as “strong,” powered by resilient consumer spending, robust capital investments, and accelerating productivity. The labor market has similarly held its ground, with job creation keeping pace with expansion in the workforce as the unemployment rate remains virtually unchanged.

“Economic activity is expanding at a strong pace. While uncertainty remains elevated owing, in part, to geopolitical developments, domestic spending has been resilient. Productivity growth is strong, and capital investment is robust. Job gains have kept pace with the workforce, and the unemployment rate has changed little,” the press release said.

Yet, despite these positive economic undercurrents, central bank officials signaled they are not ready to declare victory on prices.

“Inflation remains elevated. The accumulation of more information will help the Committee determine the policy stance appropriate to ensure a timely return of inflation to the Committee’s 2 percent goal. The Committee will deliver price stability,” it added.

The central bank also acknowledged that heightened geopolitical tensions continue to inject a heavy dose of uncertainty into the domestic outlook. However, the committee closed its remarks with a firm, unequivocal directive to corporate America and Wall Street: “The Committee will deliver price stability.”
