The United States military has said it targeted Iran’s rocket launchers on Larak Island, fanning tension by breaking a month-long lull in direct kinetic action. The Sunday’s operation represents the first direct American strike on Iranian targets since 29 July, when the US military executed a significant wave of retaliatory bombardments following an attempted raid on American outposts.
According to Captain Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for US Central Command, American forces struck two launchers on the strategic island after intelligence personnel observed units preparing to fire rocket-propelled mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
Local residents reported hearing a significant explosion in the vicinity of the island, a detail later carried by Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency. The targeted island sits directly adjacent to the strait, a critical choke point for global oil shipments that remains the geopolitical focal point of ongoing regional friction.
The intervention follows a recent declaration by the Trump administration that Central Command had successfully cleared all naval mines from the waterway’s international shipping lanes. Last Tuesday, President Trump issued a stark warning, stating that Tehran had been formally notified that any vessel caught deploying new mines would face immediate and systematic destruction.
A US official reiterated that American forces maintain a vigilant presence in the area to guarantee the unhindered flow of international maritime commerce.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a fierce promise of retaliation. In a statement broadcast by the state network IRIB, a military spokesperson condemned what they termed a “US-Zionist” assault, claiming the operation resulted in both military and civilian casualties and branding the strike a fatal strategic blunder by the White House.
The sudden military escalation coincides with delicate diplomatic efforts. Iranian and Omani officials have been locked in discussions aimed at securing a framework to stabilise maritime traffic through the shipping corridor. While regional mediators like Qatar have actively supported these talks, Tehran has consistently sought to link the freedom of navigation to broader security arrangements and direct concessions from Washington.
Despite the violence, the White House confirmed on Thursday that no formal diplomatic negotiations are underway to resolve the six-month conflict. President Donald Trump has recently prioritised aggressive economic leverage over sustained military engagement, suggesting that American financial pressure would ultimately force a diplomatic breakthrough. The US Treasury has also warned of devastating secondary sanctions against any nation failing to sever economic links with Tehran, describing the impending financial measures as an economic blockade.
