PESHAWAR (Sept 11): The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly, on Friday, passed a majority resolution condemning Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, despite a visible lack of quorum in the house. The session was highly charged, with lawmakers chanting slogans like “India ka jo yaar hai, gaddar hai” (Whoever is a friend of India is a traitor).
Government members—including Provincial Law Minister Aftab Alam, Information Minister Shafi Jan, Dr. Amjad, and Meena Khan Afridi—harshly criticized Maryam Nawaz. They argued that her recent statements reflect her family’s historical stance, effectively giving India a “clean chit.” Lawmakers claimed her political slogan “Jaag Punjabi Jaag” (Wake up, Punjabi) is inherently biased and demanded that she face trial under Article 6 of the Constitution for high treason.
The debate expanded to broader historical and political grievances against Punjab, with members pointing out that both the assassination of Liaquat Ali Khan and the assassination attempt on the PTI founder occurred in Punjab. They alleged that the real perpetrators of terrorism are those behind the Model Town, Muridke, while also accusing PML-N leadership, specifically Rana Sanaullah, of having ties to banned outfits.
Awami National Party (ANP) member Nisar Baz joined the criticism, calling Maryam Nawaz’s remarks an insult to the province and its 86,000 martyrs. He also took aim at Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, labeling him an “establishment stooge” and a mere employee who has no right to propose new administrative units.
Baz highlighted resource distribution disparities, noting that electricity and gas produced in KP are routed to Punjab while the local tribal populations remain deprived of basic energy utilities. He concluded by stating that KP’s people are being actively targeted because of these discriminatory policies, yet the blame is unfairly shifted onto them.
