PESHAWAR (Sept 27): Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is revisiting its strategy amid a looming possibility of governor rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, following the abrupt postponement of its September 27 protest march.

The events unfolded in last few days triggered intense internal debates over parliamentary strategies, the threat of federal emergency measures, and the potential dissolution of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.

According to the Pakistan conventional media, the fractures widened into public view following a crucial meeting between the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sohail Afridi, and senior party leader Ali Amin Gandapur at the latter’s residence in Dera Ismail Khan. The high-level discussions, which took place after the Chief Minister visited victims of a recent bomb blast in the district, reportedly focused on the fallout of the canceled march and a deteriorating political landscape that party insiders warn is heading into a “blind alley.”

According to TV channels, the leadership is increasingly alarmed by signals from Islamabad indicating that the federal government is actively reviewing options to impose a state of emergency.

Assembly dissolution on the table

Faced with expanding federal pressure and a looming decision from the Federal Constitutional Court, both leaders extensively deliberated on extreme constitutional counter-measures. Sources reveal that Chief Minister Afridi expressed readiness to dissolve the provincial legislature to force a political crisis, provided he receives formal backing from the party’s legislative wing, the media claimed.

“If the parliamentary party grants permission, I can move to dissolve the assembly,” Afridi was quoted as telling Gandapur during the strategy session.

The two figures also mapped out contingency frameworks, including the selection of an alternative Chief Minister and formal steps required to take the broader party leadership into confidence should the provincial government decide to step down.

Imran Khan expresses severe anger

The internal crisis has been further compounded by reports of profound dissatisfaction from PTI’s incarcerated founder. Gandapur briefed the Chief Minister on a recent meeting with the party leader inside prison, which was attended by his sisters, Bushra Bibi, and a sitting senator.

During that prison meeting, the founder reportedly unleashed severe criticism against several top-tier party officials, accusing them of actively harming PTI’s strategic interests through mismanagement and internal sabotage. The founder’s explicit expressions of anger have intensified paranoia within the party ranks, as leadership figures scramble to realign themselves amid shifting internal dynamics and escalating threats from the federal capital.
