KARACHI (Aug 20): The case of a missing newborn following a caesarean operation at a private hospital in Karachi took a shocking twist on Saturday, after a medical examination of the ‘victim mother’ revealed she was not pregnant at all.
No baby went missing from Hamdard Hospital in Nazimabad, and the entire incident stemmed from a woman faking her pregnancy due to immense pressure from her in-laws, a spokesperson for SSP District Central Dr. Muhammad Imran Khan said.
The statement follows media reports a day earlier claiming that a woman named Zubia had undergone a C-section at Hamdard Hospital (Nazimabad No. 3), but doctors told her husband that there was no baby.
The claim sparked outrage from the family, who staged a violent protest and vandalized hospital property. Her husband, Rashid, also filed a complaint with the police against the doctors.
The claim of the family initiated an investigation where police sent Zubia to the Medico-Legal Officer (MLO) at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The subsequent medical report officially confirmed that she was never pregnant.
According to the police spokesperson, the probe revealed that family pressure had driven the woman to fabricate the pregnancy. Furthermore, investigators uncovered serious negligence on the part of the hospital administration. Staff failed to conduct any formal medical check-up before wheeling the woman into the operating theater, choosing instead to blindly rely on an ultrasound report shown to them on a mobile phone. That report was later found to be completely fake.
The Nazimabad Police Station has since received a formal application from the woman’s husband, Rashid, seeking legal action against the hospital staff, and proceedings are moving forward in accordance with the law.Under the direct supervision of SSP Central Dr. Muhammad Imran Khan, a thorough investigation is underway covering all dimensions of the case. Further legal action against those responsible will be initiated once the final report from the medical commission is received. As part of the ongoing probe, police have already secured all available evidence, including medical records, CCTV footage, and other relevant data.
