Only last week, Dr Umar’s wife was driven by sheer desperation to knock on a neighbour’s door, begging them to buy the family’s kitchen oven just so she could feed her hungry children. The neighbour, unable to buy the appliance, gently handed her 2,000 rupees to help keep them afloat.

KARACHI (Sept 20): A doctor, his wife, and their three young daughters have been found dead inside a locked flat in the Ahsanabad area of Karachi, prompting a major police investigation.

The grim discovery was made at the Lakhani Flats on Sunday after neighbours alerted the building’s watchman to a powerful stench emanating from the property. Officers from the local precinct responded to the Madadgar 15 call, forcing entry into the flat, which was secured from the inside.

The bodies, which police believe had been there for several days, were spread across two rooms. One of the young girls was found on a bed, while her two sisters lay on a mattress. The keys to the flat were recovered from beneath Dr Umar’s pillow, but despite an exhaustive forensic search, investigators have been unable to locate any mobile phones inside the premises.

The policed have thoroughly swept the apartment to gather forensic evidence and are currently treating the deaths as unexplained, with formal post-mortem examinations underway to establish the exact cause of death.

Rescue workers are shifting the bodies to the hospital after a doctor and four family members were found dead in a Karachi flat.

Initial enquiries suggest the father facing a devastating cancer diagnosis and severe financial ruin.  A neighbor revealed that Dr Umar’s wife had tried to sell their household oven just last week to get some cash. The neighbor declined to buy the appliance but instead provided the family with 2,000 rupees in financial assistance.

Further reports indicate that Dr Umar, who originally hailed from Bahawalnagar, had recently resigned from a nearby private hospital after receiving a cancer diagnosis. He had also reportedly fallen victim to a street robbery a few days prior, during which his salary and personal effects were taken.

Senior officers revealed that Dr Umar, originally from the Bahawalnagar district, had plunged into deep distress following a series of health and financial crises. He had recently invested in opening his own medical clinic, but the business failed and was forced to close. Though he later secured a job at a nearby private hospital, he initially took a week’s leave before ultimately resigning due to escalating psychological distress and failing health. Just last month, he had been diagnosed with kidney cancer.

The family’s troubles were compounded on September 9, when Dr Umar fell victim to a street robbery, an incident neighbors say left him visibly broken and deeply anxious.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) East, Zubair Nazir Sheikh, confirmed that the Crime Scene Unit has swept the apartment and collected forensic evidence. “We are investigating this tragedy from all possible angles,” SSP Sheikh stated, adding that the exact cause of death will only be determined once the post-mortem reports are finalized.

Police are currently attempting to track down extended family members within Karachi, while confirming that one of Dr Umar’s brothers resides in Punjab.

The Sindh Home Minister, Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, has demanded a comprehensive report from senior detectives as the investigation continues.
