ISLAMABAD (Sept 28): Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has claimed that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is completely unprepared for its planned protests on 4 October, while refusing to rule out Governor’s rule in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province.
Speaking to a private news channel on Monday, Tarar made it clear that while PTI appears disorganized, the federal government is leaving nothing to chance. “Whether they turn up or not, the government’s preparations are absolute,” he said.
The Information Minister also dismissed widespread reports of a complete transport lockdown, rejecting claims that major motorways had been entirely sealed off in anticipation of unrest.
Turning his attention to the provincial administration in Peshawar, Tarar launched a blistering critique of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government. He argued that provincial authorities should abandon protest marches and focus instead on the deteriorating law and order situation within their own borders.
“The nation provides billions of rupees to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government specifically for counter-terrorism,” Attaullah Tarar said, questioning the provincial leadership’s security policies. He also targeted local governance failures, taking aim at controversial mining and mineral contracts, as well as recent changes to the provincial Police Act, which he claimed would actively damage the region’s security apparatus.
When pressed by anchor on whether Islamabad might impose Governor’s Rule or deploy other emergency administrative measures to wrest control of the province, Tarar refused to be drawn into specifics.
“It is entirely premature to offer an opinion on Governor’s Rule or any other administrative intervention at this stage,” he stated, adding that the federal government would assess the situation as it evolves. “Ultimately, whatever is in the best interest of the province must be done.”
