KARACHI (Sept 30): A high-profile terrorist commander with a Rs 3 million bounty on his head has been arrested during an intelligence-led raid in Karachi, senior police officials have confirmed.
Nek Ikhtiar, better known by his alias Gul Badshah, was captured by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Karachi Police within the jurisdiction of the Docks police station. He is a senior area commander for the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Sufi Muhammad group.
Acting on a precise tip-off, SIU operatives executed the operation in the coastal neighbourhood, recovering a live hand grenade from his possession during the arrest.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for the SIU, Dr Samiullah Soomro, confirmed that Ikhtiar was listed as a high-value target in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Counter-Terrorism Department’s (CTD) “Red Book”—a official directory of the country’s most wanted fugitives. The provincial government had previously placed a Rs 3 million reward for information leading to his capture.
According to counter-terrorism investigators, Ikhtiar has a notorious history of violence in northwestern Pakistan. He is wanted in connection with at least 19 major criminal cases in the Lower Dir district alone. The charges against him include orchestrating acts of terrorism, engaging in anti-state activities, and leading high-profile kidnapping-for-ransom rings.
Intelligence files reveal that the suspect is a well-trained terrorist, having crossed the border into Afghanistan on multiple occasions to receive advanced militant training. Investigators believe he was using Karachi as a hideout while attempting to establish a operational foothold for his faction in the metropolis.
Following his arrest, a formal case has been registered against Ikhtiar at the SIU police station under terrorism and explosive act charges.
SSP Soomro stated that a team of seasoned investigators is currently interrogating the suspect to uncover the extent of his network in Karachi, identify local facilitators, and determine if any imminent attacks were being planned in the country’s financial capital.
