KARACHI: In a major breakthrough against transnational drugs smuggling, the East Zone Police on Monday apprehended a married couple allegedly linked to an international drug syndicate operating between Pakistan and Australia.

The arrests were made during a targeted raid near Chakar Hotel, officials confirmed.

The suspects, identified as Ali Raza and his wife, Maryam, were intercepted by police teams following intelligence reports. Upon searching their belongings, officers recovered a sophisticated cache of illicit substances concealed within 14 pairs of slippers (Peshawari Chappal), alongside two separate packets of hashish (charas).

According to initial police investigations, the network utilized intercity passenger buses to transport narcotics from Quetta to Karachi. Raza and his wife were responsible for receiving the shipments in the metropolitan hub, which were then systematically packaged and smuggled to Australia.

“The syndicate operated on a cross-border financial model,” a senior police official stated, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “Once the contraband reached Australia, operatives based there sold the drugs and funneled the illicit proceeds back into Pakistan through informal channels.”

The East Zone Police have formally registered cases against the couple under the Control of Narcotic Substances (CNS) Act.

A comprehensive investigation is currently underway to identify other domestic facilitators and map out the broader international linkages of the network.
