QUETTA (Oct 27): Security forces have launched a massive dragnet in Balochistan after armed men abducted Prince Muhammad Khan Ahmedzai, the youngest son of the self-exiled Khan of Kalat, along with his security detail.
Local police officials reported that the incident unfolded late Sunday night near the town of Sorab. Armed militants intercepted the Prince’s convoy as he traveled along the highway from Khuzdar to Kalat. The attackers set up a makeshift checkpoint, overwhelmed the Prince’s guards, and fled with him and three bodyguards toward an undisclosed location.
While no group has formally claimed responsibility, intelligence sources are looking closely at Baloch separatist factions, particularly the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA). The abduction has sent shockwaves through the region, largely due to the intricate and often contradictory political posture of the Kalat royal family.
The Prince’s father, Mir Suleman Dawood Jan Ahmedzai, the traditional ruler or Khan of Kalat, has lived in self-imposed exile in London since 2006. From the UK, the senior Ahmedzai aligns closely with exiled separatist figures from the Marri and Bugti tribes, maintaining a hardline stance against the Pakistani state. He is accused of fanning anarchy and promoting an anti-state narrative while sitting abroad.
According to police sources, armed individuals belonging to the banned BLA abducted the Crown Prince, Khan Muhammad son of the Khan of Kalat from the National Highway near Khesun Don in Kalat. Sources state that the incident occurred when the militants intercepted a vehicle on the highway and fled, taking the Crown Prince to an unknown location. Upon receiving information about the incident, a large contingent of police and security forces arrived at the scene. The area has been placed under a strict blockade, and a search operation has been launched to recover the abductee.

In sharp contrast, his sons have integrated into Pakistan’s mainstream political and security architecture. Another of the Khan’s sons, Prince Agha Umar Ahmedzai, is an active lawmaker serving as a Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) in Balochistan.
The abducted Prince, Muhammad Khan, has also walked a fine line with state authorities. He previously engaged in high-profile talks with senior military officials, including the Inspector General of the Frontier Corps (FC), in past efforts to negotiate his father’s return from exile, a dialogue the Khan publicly disavowed.
This striking dichotomy within the House of Kalat, where the patriarch backs a separatist movement while his sons hold state office and collaborate with the establishment, has long sparked local intrigue. Observers note that if a separatist group like the BLA is indeed behind the kidnapping, it signals a dangerous escalation, highlighting that mainstream political alignment offers little protection in Balochistan’s highly volatile tribal landscape.

District administration and law enforcement agencies have been placed on high alert, with additional checkpoints set up along the strategic Khuzdar-Sorab-Kalat highway as the search operation intensifies.
