LAHORE (Nov 1): A customer was rushed to Mian Munshi Hospital in critical condition after consuming a meal contaminated by a dead lizard at an eatery in Malik Park, triggering a fierce physical fight between the restaurant staff and the patrons.

The victim’s health rapidly deteriorated immediately after eating the contaminated trotters (paye) at ‘Babaji Chanay, Desi Bakray and Sri Paye’shop, sparking an intense confrontation that quickly escalated from a verbal dispute into an all-out physical brawl as the shopkeeper and his workers attacked the customers with kicks and punches.

Mobile phone footage of the violent clash surfaced on social media, with one video showing a dead lizard inside the ‘Paye’ plate, while a second clip captured restaurant employees assaulting the group of patrons who had confronted them over the food safety hazard.

Following the brawl, the victims formally approached the Lower Mall Police Station, filing an application to register a criminal case against the eatery’s management for both the toxic food and the subsequent physical assault.

The incident underscores a lethal trend of food contamination across Punjab. Just last month, a devastating food poisoning tragedy in Kanganpur, Kasur, claimed the lives of five family members after a lizard fell into home-cooked rice pudding (kheer). In a separate October incident in Lahore, two young siblings died after consuming an aloo gobi dish similarly contaminated by a toxic insect or lizard, prompting renewed demands for the Punjab Food Authority to enforce stricter hygiene compliance.

In a separate but similar incident in Lahore during October, two young siblings lost their lives after consuming a cauliflower and potato dish (Aloo Gobi) that had allegedly been contaminated by a toxic insect or lizard. Local health advocates have renewed calls for the Punjab Food Authority to enforce stricter hygiene inspections at commercial eateries following this latest outbreak of violence and poor sanitation.
