RAWALPINDI (Aug 22, 2026): The federal government has called in the Pakistan Army in Rawalpindi to fortify the security of the city under Article 245 of the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, a day after opposition parties including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) reaffirmed their September 27 protest.
A notification issued by the Ministry of Interior stated that the deployment of the army is being carried out at the request of the Punjab Home Department, adding, that the Army is being deployed to maintain the law and order situation.
On Friday opposition parliamentary parties chaired by the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai held a meeting at the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa House in Islamabad. In that meeting it was decided to carry on with the plan for a full-fledged protest and long march on September 27.
The opposition parties are demanding the release of PTI founder Imran Khan and the implementation of the Supreme Court (SC) order to transfer the incarcerated former premier to a private hospital.
Under the new directives, three companies of the Pakistan Army will be deployed in Rawalpindi for six months. Approximately more than 400 personnel will be stationed, said the notification
The Pakistan Army, in collaboration with the district administration, will maintain the law and order situation. Security arrangements at sensitive locations and major highways will be made effective and the district administration will be assisted to deal with any untoward situation, it elaborated.
