ISLAMABAD (Aug 19, 2026): The government raised the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel(HSD) by Rs3.34 and Rs5.27 per liter, respectively, for the next 24 hours, the energy ministry announced on Tuesday. In the last two days, the price of high-speed diesel rose by Rs 9.11 and petrol by Rs. 11.74 per liter.
On Monday, the government raised the price of petrol by Rs5.77 and high-speed diesel by Rs6.47.
The recent increase in petroleum product prices has pushed up the price of petrol to Rs334.55 per litre and HSD to Rs395.69 per litre.
The new mechanism of reviewing petroleum product prices on a daily basis faced resistance from petroleum dealers and goods transporters’ associations. Last week, the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers’ Association (PPDA) called off its decision to begin a strike on Aug. 15 after the government approved a proposed revision in the dealers’ profit margins.
Similarly, the All Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance (APGTA) had also crippled the nationwide activities by staging a massive 9-day wheel-jam strike across the country. That strike was deferred for 40 days following successful negotiations in which the government agreed to review ending daily price adjustments and address administrative and regulatory grievances.
Petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) are the major revenue earners, with monthly sales of about 700,000 to 800,000 tonnes, compared to just 10,000 tonnes of monthly demand for kerosene.
The government is trying to encourage the use of electric vehicles and motorbikes to ease the burden of the rising prices of petroleum products.
