BELLA COOLA, Canada (Nov 5): A mother and her adult daughter have been found dead following a suspected grizzly bear attack along a remote hiking trail on the central coast of British Columbia, wildlife officials confirmed.
The victims, identified by family members as Jennifer Balcarras, 48, an art therapist, and her 20-year-old daughter, Selah Reed, were first reported missing on Sunday, November 1, after failing to return from what was expected to be a short afternoon walk near their home. Following an intensive search involving local volunteers and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), search teams located Balcarras’ remains on Monday afternoon along the Snooka West Trail, roughly eight kilometers east of Bella Coola. Reed’s body was recovered by authorities on Tuesday afternoon.
Inspector Jeff Tyre of the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) stated that evidence collected at the scene strongly indicates predatory animal involvement. Wildlife officials have not ruled out the possibility that multiple grizzly bears may have been involved in the fatal encounter.
Specialized conservation officers have deployed traps in the trail area and are actively working to locate and capture the animals responsible. Provincial authorities noted that any captured bear linked to the attack will be euthanized in accordance with public safety guidelines.
The double fatality has profoundly shaken the remote, tight-knit community of Bella Coola, which is situated within an area densely populated by wildlife. In response to the ongoing threat, the local Nuxalk Nation leadership has established a recommended evening curfew for residents while the tracking operation remains active.
The tragedy comes nearly a year after an aggressive grizzly bear attacked a school field trip group along a walking trail in the same valley, injuring 11 people. Local wildlife experts have warned the public to strictly avoid the Snooka West Trail network to prevent further dangerous human-wildlife encounters and ensure safety during the active investigation.
