RAWALPINDI (Oct 21): Former human rights minister Dr Shireen Mazari has condemned Pakistan’s legal system, accusing the courts of selective justice after the Prime Minister’s daughter and son-in-law were acquitted while her own daughter, activist Imaan Mazari, and her husband face an anti-terrorism trial.
Reacting on a news about acquittal of prime minister’s daughter and son-in-law in corruption case, Dr. Shireen Mazari raised questions over the transparency of the judgement.
The former human rights minister expressed her fury on social media following the acquittal of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s daughter, Rabia Imran, and son-in-law, Ali Imran Yousuf, in a high-profile corruption case linked to the Punjab Power Development Company.
It’s a total farce. A sham trial with no due process just like the Majoka-conducted trial! For Imaan & Hadi it’s only about vengeance never about justice. After all only privileged children like those of @CMShehbaz & Judge Asif get instant justice be it for corruption or murder respectively! Shameful.

Writing on the social media platform X, Dr Mazari described the judicial proceedings as a “total farce” and a “sham trial with no due process”. She contrasted the swift exoneration of the prime minister’s family with the ongoing prosecution of her daughter, the prominent human rights lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir, and her son-in-law, Hadi Ali Chattha.
“For Imaan and Hadi it’s only about vengeance, never about justice,” Dr Mazari wrote, adding that immediate legal relief in cases of corruption or murder appeared reserved exclusively for the privileged children of powerful figures like Shehbaz Sharif and Judge Asif.
The remarks come as an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi nears the conclusion of a fast-tracked trial against the younger Mazari and her husband. The couple were arrested following an incident on 29 October last year, in which they were accused of assaulting police officers and breaching security protocols by attempting to remove road barriers during the England cricket team’s tour of Pakistan.
During a hearing on Monday, Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra recorded the final statements from prosecution witnesses, including the chief investigating officer. The defence team, led by advocate Emal Mandokhail, is expected to present its arguments as the court resumes on Wednesday.
The case has drawn widespread criticism from human rights groups, who view the deployment of anti-terrorism laws against the couple as politically motivated retaliation for their activism and legal work.
