TEL AVIV (Oct 12): A school trip to Israel’s volatile northern border ended in tragedy on Monday afternoon when a powerful explosion ripped through a group of middle school hikers, leaving one person dead and 20 others injured.

The blast occurred at approximately 2:53 pm near the Pe’er observation point on the Ramim Ridge, close to Kibbutz Yiftach. The victims were students and teachers from the Ort Ma’alot Yeshiva school in the Western Galilee.

Initial findings by Israeli police and bomb disposal teams suggest the catastrophe was caused by unexploded ordnance left behind from previous conflicts rather than a fresh cross-border attack. However, the proximity to the Lebanese frontier prompted an immediate, massive security response.

Mass-casualty response

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) swiftly declared a mass-casualty incident. Paramedics from the Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency service, alongside military personnel, treated victims on the hillside. Air force helicopters were scrambled to airlift the most severely wounded to regional hospitals.

Emergency workers confirmed that a teenager died from their injuries. Two other victims remain in a serious condition, whilst three are suffering from moderate injuries. Paramedics treated a further 15 people at the scene for minor injuries and severe shock.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short a scheduled campaign visit to Shomron to return to Jerusalem for urgent security briefings. The Education Ministry, which confirmed the field trip had been officially authorized, has deployed crisis support teams to assist the traumatized pupils and staff.

‘UFO’ panic sparks political row over drone incursion

The tragedy comes amid heightened anxieties in northern Israel, following reports of a mysterious object flying over the region over the weekend, which initially sparked panic regarding a “UFO”.

A political row has since erupted after Nisan Zeevi, a Knesset candidate for the right-wing Beyachad list, publicly claimed the object was actually a highly classified, new generation of Hezbollah surveillance drone.

Mr Zeevi alleged that the aircraft bypassed Israel’s multi-layered air defense systems entirely, flying as far south as the strategic port city of Haifa. He accused the government of deliberately censoring the breach.

“For two days now, the government of Israel has been hiding the fact that a new type of Hezbollah UAV penetrated into Israel,” Mr Zeevi said in a statement, risking a potential breach of military censorship laws. He alleged the drone successfully filmed sensitive strategic sites before returning safely to Lebanon “without interception, and without sirens”.

The IDF has not officially commented on Mr Zeevi’s specific claims, though military sources confirmed an unrelated, suspicious aerial target was successfully intercepted over southern Lebanon earlier on Monday.
