ATHENS (Sept 27): Four American honeymooners are among six people confirmed dead after a catastrophic gas explosion ripped through a residential building in Athens historic Plaka district.

The tragedy unfolded at around 7:30am on Friday on Lysikratous Street, beneath the shadow of the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus. The victims, two couples in their 30s and 40s, were scheduled to fly home later that afternoon but never arrived at the airport.

The catastrophic blast near the Acropolis was caused by a major failure or leak in the property’s gas infrastructure, Greek authorities have confirmed. According to statements from the Athens Mayor, Haris Doukas, and forensic investigators from the Greek Fire Brigade, the incident is being treated strictly as a tragic accident.

Emergency crews working through the night recovered the bodies of all six missing individuals from the flattened two-storey structure. Among the dead were also an elderly local couple—a 77-year-old man and his 78-year-old Albanian-born wife—who had been seen on their balcony just minutes before the blast.

US Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle expressed deep sadness over the loss, offering thoughts and prayers to the victims’ families and praising Greek first responders for their tireless efforts. The US Embassy is currently providing consular assistance to the grieving families.

The scale of the devastation became clear as a convoy of ambulances packed into the narrow, historic street. Onlookers watched in silence as rescue workers emerged from the ruins carrying stretchers bearing bodies wrapped in silver foil. The first victim, an American woman, was pulled from the wreckage of a bathroom in the early hours of Saturday but was pronounced dead upon arrival at the city’s Elpis Hospital.

Fears for the tourists grew rapidly on Friday after relatives in the United States launched desperate social media appeals. One family member posted a frantic plea for information, noting that their cousins, Ian and Florida, were staying in the building while celebrating their honeymoon.

Around 30 firefighters, alongside elite units from Greece’s EMAK disaster squad, continue to clear the heavy concrete slabs. While two women were successfully rescued from an adjacent property shortly after the blast, authorities have held off a full forensic investigation into the second-floor gas line until the site is entirely cleared.

Hope of finding survivors had faded by Friday evening. Athens Deputy Mayor Panagiotis Harlaftis confirmed that sniffer dogs had completed their initial sweeps as crews pushed deep into the bedrooms, suggesting the explosion likely caught the victims in their sleep.

Officials have strongly stressed that there is absolutely no indication of terrorism, state-sponsored foul play, or an external attack.A formal investigation by the Fire Brigade’s crime unit remains underway to determine the exact origin of the gas leak within the building.
