ISLAMABAD (Oct 26): Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik warned on Monday that gas consumers must brace for supply disruptions in coming months, citing a severe winter gas shortage driven by dwindling domestic reserves and import constraints.

Responding to a calling attention notice in the National Assembly on Monday regarding skyrocketing Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices, the minister explicitly stated that gas supply challenges would intensify as temperatures drop across the country.

Addressing the pricing and availability of LPG, Malik noted that while the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) maintains oversight, immediate heavy-handed crackdowns could inadvertently create problems. Instead, he announced that Ogra will launch coordinated regulatory operations with provincial governments within the next few days to stabilize the market.

The minister also highlighted structural bottlenecks in importing Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), revealing that Pakistan is currently facing operational hurdles with gas imports from Qatar. These import challenges, coupled with peak winter demand, are expected to exacerbate the shortfall in the coming months.

To cushion the impact of rising fuel costs on low-income segments, the federal minister disclosed that the government is finalizing a targeted relief policy. The new framework, aimed at protecting vulnerable households from LPG price hikes, is expected to be completed within the next 48 hours.
