RIYADH (Nov 3): The U.S. State Department has ordered the immediate evacuation of all non-emergency government personnel and their families from Saudi Arabia, following a sharp escalation in cross-border missile and drone strikes by Iranian-backed Houthi forces.
The mandate, which significantly upgrades the Washington security posture in the region, comes amid a wave of targeted hostilities against civilian airports and critical infrastructure across the Kingdom. The attacks have already caused civilian casualties and widespread disruptions to international air travel.
Security Alert: U.S. Mission Saudi Arabia (November 3, 2026) Iranian-supported Houthis have engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civilian airports and other critical infrastructure resulting in civilian casualties and severe travel disruptions. These hostilities have the potential to escalate rapidly beyond that immediate area. Effective October 23, 2026, the Department of State ordered non-emergency U.S. government employees and U.S. government employee family members to leave Saudi Arabia due to safety risks. U.S. government employees working in Saudi Arabia require special authorization from the Chief of Mission to use any airport in Saudi Arabia following recent missile and UAV attacks on airports in the Kingdom. U.S. citizens should be aware of potential attacks on airports, airspace closures, flight cancellations, and travel disruptions. Please take extreme caution if you choose to use airports in Saudi Arabia. We recommend checking your flight departure status directly with the airline and with the airport. Diplomatic sources indicate the withdrawal is being executed on an emergency footing due to intelligence warnings that the conflict could escalate rapidly beyond the current theater of operations.
Under strict new security protocols, any remaining U.S. government personnel in the country are now barred from using any Saudi airport without explicit, individual authorization from the Chief of Mission. The restriction follows recent drone and missile strikes that directly compromised airfield security within the Kingdom.
The U.S. Mission in Riyadh has issued a parallel urgent advisory to private American citizens currently in Saudi Arabia, warning of imminent threats to commercial aviation, potential airspace closures, and sudden flight cancellations.
“U.S. citizens should be aware of potential attacks on airports, airspace closures, flight cancellations, and travel disruptions. Please take extreme caution if you choose to use airports in Saudi Arabia. We recommend checking your flight departure status directly with the airline and with the airport,” it said.
Did the US ditch Saudi Arabia? Kingdom left at the mercy of Houthis
U.S. nationals who choose to transit through Saudi air hubs have been told to exercise extreme caution, maintain heightened situational awareness, and verify their flight status directly with carriers as the regional security situation deteriorates.
