MADRID (Nov 3) : Spanish prosecutors and national police have initiated an involuntary manslaughter investigation following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who passed away on Tuesday morning after an on-field collision during a second-division match.
The 30-year-old forward sustained fatal head and chest injuries during the final minutes of Monday night’s Segunda División clash against FC Andorra at Tenerife’s Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López. De Miguel was pursuing a long ball near the halfway line when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono charged far out of his penalty area and collided with the striker at high speed.
The impact left De Miguel motionless on the pitch after he briefly clutched his chest. Owono was immediately shown a straight red card by the referee. Visibly shaken by the severity of the injury, the goalkeeper ran back to his opponent as medical personnel rushed onto the field. Paramedics treated the striker for over five minutes before the match was permanently abandoned in the 108th minute with the score tied at 2-2.
🖤 DEP

Reports from Spanish media indicate that De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest in the ambulance and was resuscitated en route to the Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz. Though initially listed in intensive care as “stable despite the severity of his condition,” the club confirmed that his health declined neurologically overnight. He was pronounced dead at 8:00 AM on Tuesday.
“Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, we communicate the tragic passing of Jesús de Miguel,” CD Tenerife said in a statement. “There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness.”
The High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands confirmed to El País that a formal judicial inquiry has been opened, noting that Spanish law mandates an automatic investigation for any non-natural death. Following the incident, Owono deactivated his social media accounts, while FC Andorra released a statement offering its full collaboration to authorities and announcing the postponement of their upcoming Sunday fixture.
