ISLAMABAD (Oct 4): Crucial midnight talks between Pakistan’s ruling coalition and the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have broken down without a breakthrough, setting the stage for renewed civic disruption and the possibility of an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Following hours of closed-door discussions in the National Assembly Speaker’s chamber, both negotiating teams emerged empty-handed, dispelling earlier optimism of a compromise. The failure of the dialogue leaves the PTI’s planned long march firmly on course, raising immediate concerns over shipping-container barricades, commuter paralysis, and heightened security deployments in Islamabad and neighbouring garrison city Rawalpindi.

Speaking to correspondents after the hectic meeting session, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan confirmed that the principal aims of the meeting had not been achieved. However, he maintained that communication channels should remain open.
“As I have said before, our long march is intact,” Gohar told reporters. “Under its guise, no measures should be introduced that foment hostility and division among the people of the province.”
Addressing rumours of the imposition of Governor’s rule or a state of emergency in the PTI-administered Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Gohar added: “There is nothing in the Constitution that permits abrogating public rights through an order.”
“ Neither an emergency nor Governor’s rule provides an answer to a political march. Dialogue can still take place while the march proceeds; nothing is final in politics,” he said.
PPP parliamentary leader Senator Sherry Rehman, who attended as part of the government delegation, struck a conciliatory note. She stated that her party had spent the preceding 48 hours working to shield the federation from administrative chaos, describing their stance as an effort to act as a constitutional buffer between the bitter rivals.
Senior government figures, however, directed sharp reproaches at the opposition. Rana Sanaullah, adviser to the Prime Minister on political affairs, said negotiations had touched upon the provision of medical facilities to incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail.
“We assured them that proceedings have adhered strictly to the law and prison manuals, and will continue to do so,” Sanaullah said.
“The core problem is that the PTI leadership and its provincial administration refuse to honour their constitutional obligations or cooperate with the federal government’s counter-terrorism framework,” he maintained.
That position was reinforced by Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, who claimed a tentative understanding had been reached before the PTI team walked it back following direct instructions from Peshawar.
He said: “If the PTI delegates left disillusioned, it is solely down to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s unwillingness to join the state’s fight against militancy.”
