MULTAN (Oct 21): A local court on Tuesday granted police a four-day physical remand for contractor Tauqeer Nazir, the primary suspect accused of deliberately running over and killing his 15-year-old apprentice. The development follows an outbreak of chaos outside the courtroom, where a group of enraged attorneys physically assaulted the suspect.
The victim, Waseem Abbas, an orphan originally from Muzaffargarh, had been sent six days prior from the registered orphanage “Dar-ul-Khuda” to learn electrical trades under Nazir. Investigators state that on October 19, Abbas fled the worksite inside a private housing society following a wage dispute and subsequent physical mistreatment. According to the First Information Report (FIR No. 990/2026), Nazir and an accomplice, Amjad Ali, pursued the fleeing teenager in a vehicle for nearly a kilometer before intentionally running him over. Abbas suffered a fatal head injury when the impact threw him against a concrete residential gate.
Following Tuesday’s court appearance before Judicial Magistrate Saadia Aslam, an angry crowd of lawyers intercepted Nazir as he was being escorted from the courtroom. The attorneys slapped the suspect and tore his clothing, overwhelming the initial security detail. Police units intervened to rescue Nazir from the crowd, quickly transferring him back to the local police station under heavy guard.
The case has triggered strong reactions from high-ranking provincial officials. Punjab Information Minister Azma Zahid Bokhari issued a statement via X (formerly Twitter), expressing deep grief over the tragedy.
“The tragic murder of 15-year-old orphan Waseem Abbas under the wheels of a vehicle shakes every sensitive heart,” Bokhari stated. She added that women and children represent a “red line” for Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, emphasizing that such violence would face zero tolerance in the province.
Bokhari further detailed the victim’s background, noting that Abbas’s father passed away during his childhood, after which his mother remarried. Abbas and his two siblings were subsequently placed in the Dar-ul-Khuda orphanage, a facility registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860 and the Punjab Charities Commission, which currently houses roughly 140 children. While his sister was discharged six months ago to live with her mother, his brother remains at the facility.
Punjab Prosecutor General Irfan Sadiq Tarar has officially designated the murder as a high-profile case. A specialized team of prosecutors has been formed to work alongside the police department to build a rigorous legal case. Investigators confirmed that while Nazir remains in custody and the vehicle has been seized, active raids are underway in Faisalabad to apprehend the secondary suspect, Amjad Ali.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Cantt Khadija traveled to Muzaffargarh to meet with the bereaved family, extending financial assistance and assuring them of the state’s full cooperation in pursuing justice under Sections 302 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
