PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (Nov 2): A Bahamas-bound private charter jet plummeted from the sky at a catastrophic rate of speed on Sunday afternoon, crashing into a residential area just miles from President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate and leaving nine people dead.
The Bombardier Learjet 60, which had departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas, erupted into a massive fireball upon impact. The disaster has forced roughly 600 local residents from their homes and stands as the second-deadliest aviation accident in the United States this year.

Disturbing air traffic control recordings and flight tracking data reveal a swift, terrifying sequence of events in the cockpit. Minutes before the crash, the pilot reported passing through scattered storms, noting moderate turbulence and rapid ice accumulation in temperatures of minus 47 degrees Celsius.
“We have light, clear ice that is manageable and moderate turbulence,” the pilot radioed Miami Air Route Traffic Control.
The situation deteriorated seconds later when precipitation began to fall. After requesting a higher altitude to escape the weather, the flight crew suddenly declared an emergency.
“We’re descending 8,000—mayday, mayday—we’re descending 10,000 feet per minute,” the pilot transmitted, his voice capturing the escalating crisis. “We are in an overspeed condition descending 20,000 feet per minute… We’re going to crash into the ground.”
Data from the tracking website ADS-B Exchange indicates the aircraft ultimately plunged 27,000 feet in a single minute, with officials estimating its final dive reached a staggering 32,000 feet per minute before radar contact was lost.
“It looked like a missile going down,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said during a press briefing at the scene.
Remarkably, authorities report no fatalities on the ground, though the impact created a vast debris field near Military Trail, between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. The crash site sits roughly four miles south of Palm Beach International Airport—recently renamed in honor of President Trump—and approximately nine miles from Mar-a-Lago.
President Trump had been in West Palm Beach earlier Sunday but departed aboard Air Force One a little over an hour before the disaster.
The structural damage caused by the impact and subsequent fireball has displaced hundreds of local residents. Joel Flores, the Palm Beach County Commissioner for District 3 and the first county official to arrive at the scene, confirmed that approximately 600 people require emergency shelter. Displaced families are being housed at two designated county shelters while investigators secure the wreckage.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the nine fatalities on Sunday night, labeling the incident a “horrific tragedy.” According to National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) records, the loss of life is surpassed this year only by a June skydiving plane crash in Butler, Missouri, which claimed 12 lives.
FAA records show the Learjet was registered to a Delaware-based limited liability company and was actively listed online for private charter flights.
Federal investigators from both the FAA and the NTSB are converging on Palm Beach County to spearhead the investigation. While sudden severe weather and heavy icing are central to the initial inquiry, authorities emphasize that the definitive cause of the crash remains unknown.
Local police have closed all northbound and southbound lanes of Military Trail until further notice. Motorists are strictly advised to avoid the perimeter as forensic and recovery teams continue their work through the night.
