KYIV (Nov 3): A devastating Russian “double-tap” aerial bombardment on a frontline humanitarian hub in southeastern Ukraine has left at least 33 people dead and dozens more missing, in what President Volodymyr Zelensky termed “one of the deadliest attacks of this war.”

The strikes targeted a former school compound in Komyshuvakha, a village in the Zaporizhzhia region. The facility was operating as an administrative hub and weekly aid distribution point for the dwindling civilian population. According to local Governor Mykhailo Semikin, the initial strike hit just as residents arrived to collect essentials, forcing crowds to flee into a newly constructed, EU-funded underground shelter.

Russian forces then launched a secondary wave of heavy ordnance, specifically targeting the bunker where civilians and first responders were taking cover. Semikin confirmed that Russia deployed massive KAB-500 and three-ton FAB-3000 aerial bombs. The overwhelming kinetic force fractured the reinforced concrete structure and ignited a major fire, trapping those inside under tons of debris.

Emergency service personnel and police officers who rushed to the scene after the initial explosion were caught in the subsequent blast. At least two rescue workers, Denys Konovalenko and Oleksiy Sushchevsky, both 44,and four local police officers were killed while assisting civilians.

As search-and-rescue teams continue digging through the collapsed structure, nearly 50 people remain unaccounted for, leaving authorities fearful that the death toll will climb significantly. The Russian Defence Ministry disputed the account, claiming its strikes targeted active Ukrainian military units and hardware in the vicinity.

The carnage in Zaporizhzhia comes amidst a brutal escalation in civilian casualties across Ukraine, following major aerial assaults in Kramatorsk and Kyiv in recent months. It also shatters a fragile diplomatic window. Just days earlier, a localized, US-brokered humanitarian ceasefire in the occupied city of Oleshky had safely expired after enabling the evacuation of hundreds of stranded civilians.

The Oleshky truce, independently negotiated by US First Lady Melania Trump, was hailed by Washington as a historic diplomatic breakthrough. On Tuesday, the First Lady’s office announced she would convene official representatives from both Moscow and Kyiv at the White House this Thursday to deliver remarks on the humanitarian effort.

RUSSIA’S NUCLEAR FORCES HAVE JUST SENT A CHILLING MESSAGE TO THE WORLD

However, the rapid resumption of high-intensity strikes elsewhere has cast a dark shadow over Washington’s peace overtures. President Zelensky noted that the heavy multi-region bombardment appeared calculated to exploit global distraction, deliberately coinciding with the US congressional midterm elections.
