PATNA (INDIA) Oct, 25: A major political controversy erupted on Sunday, after Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a controversial remark, ‘Modi Ka Baap’, during a public event in Patna, Bihar. The comment drew sharp condemnation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has announced nationwide protests.
The incident occurred at Patna’s Bapu Sabhagar during an event commemorating the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first Chief Minister, Dr. Shri Krishna Singh. While Kharge was addressing the gathering, a member of the audience, later identified as Santosh Kumar, interrupted by shouting, “Modi kahin nahin jayega” (Modi won’t go anywhere).
Visibly angered, Kharge retorted from the stage, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega” (Even Modi’s father will have to go), repeating the phrase multiple times. Following the exchange, Congress workers reportedly confronted and thrashed the attendee before escorting him out of the venue. Kumar later clarified to reporters outside that his statement had been misunderstood, explaining he actually meant to say that Modi would not leave office “unless there is a public revolt”.
BJP launches fierce counterattack
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh issued a strong condemnation on Sunday, accusing the opposition party of moral and ideological bankruptcy.
Taking to social media platform X, Singh expressed deep disappointment over Kharge’s statement targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late father, stating that the principal opposition party has repeatedly lowered the standard of public discourse.

‘Stunned and hurt’ by top leadership’s language
In a detailed response, Singh noted that personal attacks against the Prime Minister’s family have transitioned from grassroots workers to the highest echelons of the Congress establishment.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah led the ruling party’s offensive, accusing the Congress President of abandoning political decorum.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Shah said:
“Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has today torn apart all norms of decorum by making an indecent remark about Modi ji’s father in Patna. This is not the first time that the Congress party has used abusive language against Modi ji or his family. At times, they have hurled insults at his revered mother, at times called him ‘merchant of death,’ and at times mocked his poverty by calling him ‘chaiwala’.”
Shah further alleged that the principal opposition party is experiencing ideological bankruptcy due to a string of electoral losses.
“Under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, the Congress party keeps crossing the limits of indecency every day,” Shah stated. “In the past 12 years, the repeated electoral defeats have bred such desperation and frustration in the Congress party that it no longer has any policy left, nor any issue—only the politics of slander remains. Having lost its public base among the people, Congress is now steadily losing its base even among its own workers.”
Shah concluded by asserting that personal attacks against the Prime Minister have historically backfired on the opposition, stating, “Whenever they have made hateful comments against Modi ji or his family, the public has given Congress a resounding response every time.”
Legal complaints and demonstrations
The controversy has quickly escalated beyond verbal sparring. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary demanded an immediate apology from both Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, calling the remark an unacceptable personal attack on the family of the country’s Prime Minister.
In Patna, BJP leader Krishna Kumar Singh filed a formal police complaint against Kharge at the Kotwali Police Station, seeking an investigation into the derogatory language directed at the Prime Minister’s late father.
To register its protest against what it termed a “new low” in public discourse, the BJP leadership has directed all its state headquarters to stage nationwide demonstrations on Monday, 26 October.
