MOSCOW (Aug 25, 2026): Explosions were heard after a massive fire engulfed the $10 billion Amur Gas Chemical Complex (AGCC) located in Russia’s eastern region, leaving one Chinese contractor dead and over 100 workers injured.
The complex has been under construction for six years and was undergoing final testing ahead of its scheduled launch in early 2027. This plant will be one of the largest polymer manufacturing facilities in the world. The plant is located 6,000 kilometers away from Ukraine.

In a statement, AGCC said that the fire broke out in an auxiliary section of the pyrolysis unit. The company stated that the primary equipment suffered no damage. Nineteen workers were hospitalised with moderate to severe injuries while 104 workers were treated for minor cuts and bruises.
Officials stated that monitoring of local air quality in Svobodny showed no increase in toxic chemicals. The government of the Amur region said that the incident poses no threat to people living in nearby cities. AGCC reported that an investigative commission has been formed to determine the cause of the fire.
