DHAKA, Bangladesh (Oct 17): A morning fire tore through a popular coastal tourist resort in southeastern Bangladesh on Saturday, killing at least 10 people, including children, and injuring nine others, local officials said.

The blaze broke out around 6:30 a.m. local time at the Tuptup Resto and Resort, a three-story wooden property in the Inani area of the Cox’s Bazar district, according to Ukhiya Police Chief Mohammad Atikur Rahman Majumder.

Syed Mohammad Morshed Hossain, a local fire service official, said the flames spread rapidly through the wooden structure. Roughly 30 people were believed to be inside the resort, a well-known destination for domestic travelers near the Bay of Bengal, when the fire started.

Authorities have identified six of the 10 victims, who range in age from 5 to 33. Officials confirmed children were among the dead but did not immediately release further details on their identities.

Emergency crews and police officers rushed to the scene to conduct rescue operations. Nine injured survivors were transported to a local hospital. A resident medical officer at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital said five of those patients are being treated for burns covering approximately 5% of their bodies.
