SHEIKHUPURA (Oct 30): A daily wage labourer died outside a microfinance bank here after bank staff allegedly detained his wife over a missed loan instalment, officials and family said.

The incident, which triggered immediate police intervention, highlights the growing desperation surrounding small-scale debt recovery practices in the region.

According to police sources, the dispute arose over a default on an instalment for a PKR 50,000 microloan. Bank recovery agents allegedly took the victim’s wife from her residence and detained her inside the branch office to pressure the family for payment.

The victim, identified as Akhtar, rushed to the bank and repeatedly pleaded with the management to release his wife. Branch employees reportedly rejected his appeals, subjected him to harsh treatment, and physically removed him from the premises.

Distressed by the humiliation and the detention of his wife, Akhtar suffered a fatal medical emergency directly outside the bank building. He collapsed on the spot and was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Local law enforcement from the City Police Station responded to the scene following the incident. Police officials confirmed that the bank employees accused of involvement have been taken into custody.
