ISLAMABAD (Oct 16): The detention of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s suspended Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi and Speaker Babar Saleem Swati during the emergency crackdown has triggered widespread panic within Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The arrests have left the party’s remaining leadership fractured and struggling to find its footing under the newly imposed Governor’s rule.

The two senior figures have not been seen since President Asif Ali Zardari signed a sweeping executive decree invoking Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, effectively dismantling the KP provincial administration and establishing direct federal rule over the northwestern region.

Sohail Afridi was intercepted while leading a high-stakes protest march towards Islamabad. The demonstration aimed to pressure the federal government into releasing the jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader, Imran Khan, expanding political space for the opposition, and restoring what the party terms “constitutional supremacy.” Neither the Chief Minister nor his accompanying delegates ever reached the capital, nor have they returned to their homes.

State confirms “preventive detentions”

After initial silence from federal authorities, State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry confirmed to domestic and foreign press on Monday that Afridi and several members of his regional cabinet are being held in “preventive custody”. Talal Chaudhry stated that individuals facing active criminal charges would be processed through the courts, while those clear of charges would eventually be released.

The admission followed a guarded press briefing by Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, who acknowledged that “some” regional officials had been taken into “protective custody” during the emergency clampdown.

The political crackdown has provoked a furious response from the PTI leadership. Talking to social media, former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser described the lack of transparency as a “deeply alarming chapter in Pakistan’s history.”

“The Chief Minister is the Chief Executive of a province, while the Speaker, as the custodian of the Provincial Assembly, is responsible for safeguarding the rights of its members,” Qaiser wrote on X. “If transparent information regarding the safety and legal status of an elected Chief Minister and Speaker cannot be made available, what guarantee remains for ordinary citizens?”

The Afghan connection

The state’s sweeping move against the KP administration comes amidst a widening intelligence hunt for fugitive PTI figure Murad Saeed, whom Islamabad accuses of orchestrating the current political upheaval.

Saeed also joined the chorus raising the alarm about the detention of Sohail Afridi:

The elected representative of 4 crore people, their Chief Minister, is missing and in illegal detention. From the Provincial Assembly Speaker to Ministers, elected representatives, a former Chief Minister, and political workers, they have all been abducted. The lives and property of their families are insecure,” he wrote on his X account.

Senior federal sources, including Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, have alleged that during dialogues, Chief Minister Afridi forwarded a draft copy of a proposed government-PTI truce directly to Murad Saeed for approval.

The focus of the investigation has now crossed international borders as some reports indicate that Saeed has fled Pakistan and is currently hiding out in Sharan, located in Afghanistan’s Paktika province. Afghan municipal sources suggest he is receiving shelter from Abdul Khalique Akhund, a figure within the Afghan Taliban administration.

Further unconfirmed intelligence coordinates suggest Murad Saeed may alternatively be moving between safehouses controlled by Pakistani Taliban (TTP) commander Qari Zalmai Mehsud, under the localized protection of armed commanders Asadullah Wazir and Miran Shah Shinwari.

Security analysts in Islamabad note that the timing of Afridi’s detention is highly strategic. With intelligence networks closing in on Saeed’s cross-border footprint, federal agencies are expected to intensely interrogate the detained KP leadership to uncover the communication links tying the mainstream opposition party to figures currently operating out of Afghanistan.
