NEW DELHI (Sept 12): The BRICS group of nations has unanimously adopted a joint declaration, expressing “deep concern” over Middle East tensions and calling for maximum restraint, dialogue, and diplomacy as US-Iran strikes resume. The leaders also stressed the need to work together to maintain smooth flow of global trade, supply chains and energy.
The declaration of the BRICS summit, held in New Delhi on Saturday, supports maintaining a ceasefire in Gaza and a two-state solution for Palestine, while rejecting the forced displacement of Palestinians.
BRICS nations opposed any geographical or demographic changes in Gaza, as well as actions aimed at altering the historical status of occupied Jerusalem. The declaration stressed respect for all religious and holy sites in Al-Quds.
It called for the implementation of the UN resolution to end tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, as well as efforts to prevent conflicts and address their root causes. The leaders demanded that global conflicts be resolved through negotiations and diplomacy.

Expressing concern over the rising threat of nuclear war, BRICS leaders emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of nuclear facilities during wartime. Without naming the United States of America, the member nations also criticized unilateral trade sanctions and tariff hikes.
Meanwhile, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian “held a meeting and talks” with United Arab Emirates Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the sidelines of the summit, the Iranian embassy in India said, as the countries remain at odds over the Middle East war.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi also held a chat with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit.
