YEJAHAN REPORT
PESHAWAR (Oct 15): A horrific structural collapse at a private school in the Dir Colony neighbourhood of Peshawar has left 33 children and two teachers dead, exposing a shocking case of criminal negligence. More than 50 others were injured when multiple roofs pancaked during morning lessons, trapping dozens beneath the rubble.
Emergency services, alongside Pakistan Army personnel, rushed to the scene to pull bloodied survivors from the debris. A state of emergency was immediately declared across all major hospitals in the provincial capital to cope with the influx of casualties.
The tragedy has sparked fury among local residents after it emerged that school management had ignored explicit warnings about the building’s safety. Pupils had previously complained to the owner about the dilapidated state of the top-floor ceiling following recent heavy rains. Rather than suspending classes to carry out proper repairs, the owner reportedly propped up the sagging structure with temporary wooden supports and ordered the children back into the classroom.
The collapse: a chain reaction
According to an initial investigation report submitted to the provincial government by the district administration, the disaster unfolded in a catastrophic chain reaction: The rain-damaged roof of the topmost classroom gave way first, burying the children inside under tons of concrete. Unable to withstand the sudden impact and weight of the falling debris, the floor of the first-floor classroom collapsed entirely. The combined wreckage of both upper storeys crashed down into the ground-floor classroom, crushing the youngest pupils and their teachers beneath a mountain of rubble.

An uncle of two of the children killed in the disaster explained that the warnings were ignored until the very last moment.
“These are all our children; two of my own nephews have been martyred. People warned this school owner a thousand times that the building was coming down, but he brushed it off every time, saying, ‘It’ll be fine.’ The room that collapsed was just built from bricks and iron girders.”
“Only this morning, the children told him directly, ‘Sir, the building is falling down.’ But he just turned to the teacher and said, ‘Stop bothering the children,'” he said.
Medical officials at the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) confirmed that 53 casualties were brought to their facility alone. An LRH spokesperson stated that the victims included 36 boys and 12 girls, all aged 13 and under. While 17 children have been discharged after receiving first aid, three remain in critical condition with severe head injuries.
Fury and mourning
Distraught parents sprinted through the streets to the site after hearing the news, some digging through the dust with their bare hands. Mass funeral prayers for 15 of the young victims and one of the teachers were held later in the day in Dir Colony, attended by thousands of weeping mourners.
Questions are now mounting over how the school was permitted to operate. The district administration has officially declared the entire building unsafe, while provincial authorities admit they have been unable to verify if the school was ever registered with the education department.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sought a report of the incident from the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The Department of Education has launched an urgent inquiry, appointing a three-member committee tasked with delivering a full report within 24 hours.
A deadly pattern
This disaster comes just months after a similar tragedy in June, when 14 children were killed in the Kahna area of Lahore after the roof of a tuition centre collapsed. In that instance, dangerous construction work was being carried out on the upper floor while children were studying directly underneath on the ground floor. Police subsequently arrested three individuals, including the property owner, in connection with the Lahore collapse.

The latest catastrophe in Peshawar has renewed urgent demands across Pakistan for strict safety audits of private educational institutions, many of which operate out of cramped, poorly constructed residential buildings with absolute impunity.
